Ministry of Health Grenada pledges commitment to India funded incinerator project

Incinerator at hospital

St. George's, Grenada - 30 September 2024 (海角社区) - The Ministry of Health is pledging its commitment to completing the installation of the island鈥檚 hospital incinerator.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, with responsibility for General and Health Administration, Kim Taylor, Country Programme Specialist with the 海角社区/WHO Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Countries (ECC), Fiona Anthony, along with Chief Medical Officer, Shawn Charles, were among those recently touring the site where the incinerator will be installed.

The Government of India and the 海角社区 (海角社区) collaborated with the Ministry of Health to procure an incinerator for the St. George鈥檚 General Hospital, for the safe disposal of medical waste, to reduce the harmful impact on health workers staff and the environment. The project, valued at approximately US$250,000, includes US$100,000 donation from the Government of India.

This partnership also comprises the construction of a building to house the incinerator, the installation of the incinerator in the building and the training of operators and maintenance personnel.

The project is behind schedule due to several delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The team from Ministry of Health toured the site on Friday where the incinerator will be housed, to view first-hand the progress being made and proactively find solutions.

Following the tour, PS Taylor stated: 鈥淭he Government of Grenada is committed to safeguarding the health of its health care workers and preserving our environment. The incinerator will help us to achieve these goals, and these delays are therefore unfortunate. I am committed to seeing this project to fruition and we are working with our partners to ensure its efficient completion in the shortest time possible.鈥
